Background

It is predicted that in the next 50 years there will be an additional 8.2 million people aged 65 years or older in the UK. Many older adults live with multiple long-term conditions (or multimorbidity). In a previous SPCR-funded project, we worked with older adults with musculoskeletal and mental health problems to ascertain their priorities for future research. They discussed feeling guilt and shame and how it affected their help seeking behaviour and access to health services.

Design

We will undertake three complementary elements of research over 15 months:

  1. A scoping review of the literature to map and categorise existing research on this topic area in primary care settings (WP1)
  2. A series of focus groups using ‘creative methods’ to further explore people’s experiences of these feelings, and their impact on their healthcare use and overall health (WP2)
  3. A stakeholder engagement event to agree and specify (based on WP1&2), strategic implications, priority areas for future research and practice (WP3)

Objectives

To explore this further to develop a better understanding of the feelings and experiences of guilt, shame and self-perceived burden, and how it impacts older adult’s overall health and interactions with those involved in their care.
