Dr Moran Mandelbaum

Dr Moran Mandelbaum
Lecturer in International Relations

  • Interests in IR theory, critical security studies, nationalism, emotions and affect, and Israel/Palestine. I am specifically interested in the ways in which various signifiers and discursive projects are able to appeal emotionally to people and entail a bodily affect as part of the process of interpellation. Drawing on psychoanalysis and the works of Slavoj Žižek, I maintain that ‘empty signifiers’ can be successful in hailing people into their socio-political project precisely because they are vague, inconsistent, paradoxical and endless (fantasmatic).
