Welcome to the Centre for Professional Development and Lifelong Learning

The Centre for Professional Development and Lifelong Learning was originally established in 1994 as a department in Keele University with a unique mission to provide postgraduate education for pharmacists and other health professionals whose role is central to the prescribing and use of medicines. We became one of the centres of excellence in the School of Pharmacy and Bioengineering when it was established in 2005.

Facilitating lifelong learning and professional development

Our distance learning system of delivery, open and flexible course design, and emphasis on work-based learning using structured reflective portfolios are unique within the pharmacy education provider community.

We offer a large range of postgraduate Masters level courses within our unique and innovative CPD Plus+ and CPD Plus+ Open Learn portfolio of courses. These provide an enormous amount of flexibility for you as an individual so that you can ‘dip in and dip out’ to suit your needs as your career progresses, and accumulate credits at your chosen pace towards an academic award (Certificate, Diploma, MSc, Professional Doctorate) if you wish.

The vast majority of the courses are available to start at any time throughout the year to suit the individual practitioner.  Bespoke programmes of study relating to pharmacy practice, medicines use optimisation and prescribing in the community, secondary care and primary care can be designed on request to meet the needs of individual practitioners and sponsoring organisations.

We have a highly successful track record of commissions in this respect; for example, with the NHS and major national providers of high street community pharmacy services. Organisations such as these have specifically chosen Keele as the sole provider of CPD courses for their pharmacists, to develop their clinical, prescribing and professional career pathways, and services for the organisation and the patients they serve.

The expertise of the Postgraduate Pharmacy Team in the Centre for Professional Development and Lifelong Learning is recognised internationally, as well as throughout the UK. The Team provides advice and support to health organisations overseas, and welcomes collaborations, about developing CPD courses for their pharmacists based on the Keele Postgraduate Pharmacy model of teaching and learning at a distance and in the workplace.
