Biography

I took up the position of Pro Vice Chancellor for Research and Enterprise in April 2005 having previously held positions at Keele of Dean of the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Head of the then Department of Mathematics. My first academic post was as an assistant lecturer in statistics at Aberystwyth where I obtained my PhD under the supervision of Professor Owen Davies. I hold a BSc in Mathematics and a MSc in Biometry both from the University of Reading. Outside Keele, I am a non executive director of the Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Hospital Trust at Oswestry and sit on a NICE technology appraisal committee.

My main research interests are in medical statistics and epidemiology. I am interested the modelling of disease severity and susceptibility using genetic and other predictors in collaboration with clinical colleagues. I have been involved in the evaluation of the properties of sequential clinical trial designs in particular exploring Bayesian approaches. I am the author of over 250 peer reviewed publications in both statistical and clinical journals and two books. Research funding has been obtained from a number of sources notably EPSRC, MRC, Action Medical Research and NIHR.
