Biography

Dr Penny List is a Lecturer in Health Psychology in the School of Medicine. She is a Co-Lead for Year 1 of the MBChB course. Other roles which she holds within the School of Medicine include being the Lead for Multi-Source Feedback and being a Co-Lead for the Doctor as a Professional theme.

Dr List gained her PhD in Health Psychology from Keele University. She is also a Senior Fellow of Advance HE, previously known as the Higher Education Academy.

During her PhD studies, Dr List was a Graduate Teaching Assistant and subsequently a Learning and Teaching Assistant in the School of Psychology at Keele University. She then held the position of Lecturer in Applied Psychology at the University of Cumbria for one year, before joining the School of Medicine at Keele University in 2008.

Research and scholarship

In connection with her PhD, Dr List has carried out research looking at people’s choices about carrying out self-examinations for cancer detection. Dr List has also collaborated with her clinical colleagues at Keele University to conduct research in the field of Medical Education.

Dr List has supervised undergraduate and postgraduate students’ research projects, at both the University of Cumbria and Keele University.

Dr List is actively involved in a range of scholarship activities within and beyond the School of Medicine, many of which align with her roles as Co-Lead for Year 1 of the MBChB course, Co-Lead for the Doctor as a Professional theme, and Lead for Multi-Source Feedback. External networks which Dr List participates in include the British Psychological Society, the Behavioural and Social Sciences Teaching (BeSST) in Medicine network and Advance HE.

Teaching

Dr List teaches on Years 1, 2 and 3 of the MBChB course. She gives lectures on a range of Health Psychology topics in Years 1 and 2 and is also an Experiential Learning tutor and a Problem Based Learning tutor for these year groups. For Year 3, Dr List facilitates seminars and runs a qualitative research methods Student Selected Component option.

Dr List has been nominated twice for a Keele Excellence Award and once for a Keele Student Choice Award.

Further information

Outside of work, Dr List’s main interest is walking. She has walked from John O’Groats to Land’s End, across England and Wales from Norfolk to Anglesey, and across Northern Ireland.
