Biography

I came to Keele in 1987 as an undergraduate, and graduated in 1990 with a BSc in Mathematics and Biology. I stayed at Keele and studied for my PhD in Statistics, which I gained in 1996. In 2009 I was awarded an MSc in Health Economics from the University of Birmingham.

In 1994 I was made Research Assistant at the School of Postgraduate Medicine, Keele. In 1997 I was appointed Lecturer in Statistics at the former Industrial & Community Health Research Centre - now the Arthritis Research UK Primary Care Centre, Keele. In 2006 I was promoted to Senior Lecturer and to Reader in 2012.

I am a Fellow of the Royal Statistical Society.

Research and scholarship

My research interests are principally in the statistical and economic evaluations of clinical trials. My particular interest is in methodological work around pilot and feasibility studies.

I have been a successful co-applicant on 26 funded national grants totalling approx. £26million. I have 157 peer-review publications of original research articles published in leading international medical journals (e.g. Lancet, BMJ) and leading journals in methodology. I have successfully supervised seven PhD students and 1 MSc student to completion and have two current PhD students. I have examined four postgraduate degrees (two internal and two external to Keele). I am currently (or previously been) a member of several committees both internal and external to Keele that are concerned with: research management and leadership, study oversight, operational decision making, teaching activity and grant funding.

Teaching

I am the statistical lead on the Keele Trials short course. Also, I am a lecturer on the ‘Statistics and Epidemiology’ module of the Masters in Medical Science.

Further information

I am a member of several committees both internal and external to Keele that are concerned with: research management and leadership, study oversight, operational decision making, teaching activity and grant funding.
