HUM-UROP - Information for students

These pages provide important information on the HUM-UROP processes and requirements.

Either staff members or students can propose projects. Staff members will devise and advertise projects for students to apply for. If you have an idea for an activity that you would like to undertake, you can approach any member of staff, or the School Director of Education (SDE) about your idea. For advertised projects, there will be a competitive application process: interested students will be asked to submit a CV and a short statement explaining why they are interested in the project and why they are well suited to it. The best working practice will be agreed upon between the staff leading the project and the student – UROPs are highly flexible, meaning that you can normally undertake the work at a time to suit you. It is expected that a UROP will comprise c.10-15 hours’ work. Most UROPs will take place during term-time but can take place during university holidays at the agreement of both the student and the supervisor. All students who apply for a UROP will receive feedback from the SDE on their application, whether successful or not.

The UROP scheme is open to all students, but it is recommended that projects are primarily aimed at Level 5 (second year) students, to avoid overloading final year students who are concentrating on dissertations/final exams/job or postgraduate applications. In order to be eligible to undertake a UROP, the student would normally have to meet a ‘module result average’ threshold (60% average module results from completed modules to date) – although supervisors can override this if there are compelling reasons (eg exceptional circumstances that have lowered your average).

Benefits to participating: You will learn about the professional activities undertaken by academics in the Humanities. You will develop skills that will benefit you either in postgraduate study or employment. The UROP will appear on your HEAR, giving you a tangible, recognisable achievement that can be cited on applications for postgraduate funding or employment.

If you have any questions about the scheme, or application or proposal processes, please contact the School Director of Education, Dr Siobhan Talbott.
