Biography

I am a MHRA Research Associate for the May Sinclair Critical Editions project, which will publish Sinclair’s complete prose writings. My contribution to the project is focused on her works of idealist philosophy, A Defence of Idealism (1917) and The New Idealism (1922).

Before joining Keele, I was a Fixed-Term Teacher and Associate Fellow in the Department of Literature, Film, and Theatre Studies at the University of Essex, where I also received my doctorate in 2019. In 2018-2019, I was a Research Associate for the Suffragette Stories project, based at the University of East Anglia, where I worked on their archives related to the militant suffrage movement and the papers of Annie and Jessie Kenney.

Research and scholarship

My research focuses on the communication of political ideas in Britain during the first half of the twentieth century, particularly through writing by women. My doctoral research was on Virginia Woolf and her political thought, based on which I’m currently preparing my first monograph.

In addition to my work on the May Sinclair Critical Editions Project, I’m also developing a study of interwar women writers (Winifred Holtby, Rebecca West, Una Marson, and Olivia Manning) and their engagement with changing definitions of citizenship in Britain, following the momentous 1918 Representation of the People Act.
