Biography

I read English at Cambridge and write my PhD thesis on John Bunyan, who has remained an interest (I am a past President of the International John Bunyan Society). I taught at Keele for forty years before retiring. I remain an active member of the Early Modern Seminar at Keele.

Research and scholarship

My main research interests are in the intersection of literature and theology, particularly in the seventeenth century. My current projects are a short study of Bunyan's spiritual journeys, a general book on Apocalyptic in theology and culture, and a seminar course, 'Towards a History of Holiness' for the 2018 Oxford Extra-Mural Summer School of Theology.
