Overview

A growing number of practitioners wish to advance their achievement of senior management roles specific to their sphere of practice. These roles may have a leadership, management or education focus, rather than a specific focus on the acquisition of advanced clinical skills and practice. It is anticipated that participants, whilst holding either clinical or non-clinical roles, will wish to develop the more generic skills of professional, managerial and leadership development in order to effectively lead and manage their teams. 

This module will encourage practitioners to:

• Identify and critically analyse, through reflection, their skills, knowledge and abilities in relation to the enhancement of quality care/service delivery.
• Critically evaluate current and relevant research and present a critical understanding of current and innovative insights into skills acquisition relevant to their sphere of practice.
• Critically analyse a practical application of their acquired knowledge and skills within their work area, supported by a work-based facilitator.
• Demonstrate originality, criticality, clinical reasoning and evaluative reflection on personal learning within the student’s sphere of practice.

Module aims

Entry requirements

• Candidates will normally hold current registration as a healthcare professional with an appropriate body.
• Have an identified work-based facilitator within their practice area, who will support and guide their development throughout the module.

Module content

• Interrogating the evidence base in relation to the student’s personal sphere of practice.
• Overview of work-based learning strategies and an exploration of the principles of teaching and learning.
• Learning styles.
• Overview of professional and regulatory needs.
• Reflective practice / reflective skills / reflective models.
• Exploration of personal leadership & management strategies within the workplace including the development of core skills: assertiveness, leadership, communication, ethical decision making.
• Human factor and their impact across a range of environments, including awareness and management.
• Goal and priority setting.
• Reflective analysis.
• Critical appraisal of evidence aligned to their sphere of practice.
• Self-analysis in relation to personal effectiveness skills.
• Analysis of pertinent leadership and management strategies.

Teaching and assessment

The principal learning and teaching methods used in the module may include:

• Lectures, seminars and workshops: The core of each module delivery mode is a series of face to face tutor-led or group-led seminars or workshops.
• Web-based learning using the Keele Learning Environment (KLE), Blackboard. 
• Group work and peer support. All modules use focused group work and class discussions within face to face tutor time
• Directed independent study. Most of the study hours for each module comprise independent learning by expecting participants to add depth and breadth to their knowledge of topics, to practice skills and to reflect on critical incidents and their practice.
