 Prunus 'Manoga'

This is an old variety of Japanese flowering cherry which is thought to have been bred in the USA but is now grown in Japan as well. However, in the U.S. Department of Agriculture Inventory for 1931 there is mention of it being among cherries purchased from a nursery in England.

This cultivar will eventually form a large tree of upright spreading habit c.10m x 10m in size. It is an early season flowerer, producing double or semi-double flowers before the leaves emerge. The flowers are a soft pink colour with darker pink margins and open flat to reveal a golden eye. The emerging leaves are coppery-bronze in hue becoming dark green. They show good autumn colour, becoming bright orange.
