Has been grown in Japan for over 500 years. Introduced to the UK around 1900. The flowers are double, 5cm wide, pink in bud, opening white before fading to pink. They are borne on long stalks in late April and hang in loose bunches or corymbs, closely packed along the branch.

It forms a flat-topped to 3.5m with a spread to 8m.

The early leaves, which emerge with the flowers, are a bronze-green colour, becoming bright green as they mature. The autumn colours consist of deep oranges and coppers.

  • One specimen between Walter Moberly Hall and Tawney Building along Cherry Tree Walk; tag 4019. Planted in 2002.
