Sato-zakura Group
[Syn: Prunus lannesiana Wilson cv. Aratama]
Raised/selected by Mr Masatoshi Asari in Matsumae at the southern tip of Hokkaido, Northern Japan in1967 from a hybrid between P. ‘Botan’ and a Sato-zakura - (possibly a Matsumae cherry?)
An umbrella shaped tree, large, to 5 10 m high with double flowers, 26 31 petals, in clusters of 2 3, 5 6 cm dia., white fringed with pale pink, opening flat with prominent phylloid pistils. Buds are deep red. Flowers in mid May.
Leaves broad elliptical to ovate elliptical, dark green with deep double serration on the margins. Young foliage red or pale red, appearing before the flowers.
