Biography

Professor Kristyan Spelman Miller

In her role as Pro Vice Chancellor Education Kristyan provides strategic leadership for the development of the portfolio and enhancement of learning, teaching and the wider student experience. She joined Keele in July 2021 from the University of Liverpool, where she had been Associate Pro Vice Chancellor (Education) for five years based in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences.

Kristyan has considerable experience of strategy development, in particular in relation to student success, and has led institution-wide initiatives focussed on addressing students’ differential experiences and outcomes at university. She has introduced successful schemes to enhance students’ academic skills development and employability, student engagement in research, and student partnership working. She was awarded a National Teaching Fellowship in 2011 and is a Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (Advance HE).

Prior to her move to Liverpool she had been Dean at the University of Winchester and from 2004-8 Faculty Director of Teaching and Learning at the University of Reading. She joined Reading in 1988 as a junior lecturer in Applied Linguistics, and over a 20 year period held a wide range of responsibilities at programme, school and Faculty levels.

A keen linguist with a first degree in French, Kristyan spent a number of years teaching English as a Foreign Language in France, Japan and Malaysia, before returning to the UK HE sector to specialise in Applied Linguistics. Her PhD was a study of academic written text production, a topic which continues to fuel her interests in language, learning and pedagogy. She is a strong advocate of global citizenship as part of HE’s internationalisation agenda.
