Kenny Wheeler Jazz Prize winner Jonny Mansfield is critically regarded as one of the UK’s outstanding young jazz talents. Having been nominated for an Ivor Novello Award, a Parliamentary Jazz Award and having been awarded Tebbut Exhibition Award, Richard Turner Award and the Royal Academy of Music’s Principals Prize, Jonny signed to Edition Records to release his debut album ‘Elftet’. His second album The Air in Front of You presents compositions written whilst studying for a masters in psychology. “studying psychology resulted in me wanting to compositionally explore my physical surroundings as a release from self-analysis,” says Mansfield. “As this process developed, the line between introspection and extrospection became blurred…”  

This acoustic quintet effectively contains instrumental sub-groups of strings (Dominic Ingham violin & Will Sach bass), percussion (Francesca Remigi drums, Jonny Mansfield vibraphone) and award winning saxophonist Emma Rawicz to create un-explored textures. There is an underlying shared commitment to create a kaleidoscope of colours using extended techniques that allow for familiar folk-like melodies to guide the listener through extemporaneous soundscapes. Improvisation is at the core of the performances, which is emphasised by the contrasting musical backgrounds between the members in the ensemble.
