Pint of Science 2023

Let's face it: self-care starts within.

Pint of Science is a worldwide science festival which brings researchers to your local pub/cafe/space to share their scientific discoveries with you - no prior knowledge required.

Let's face it: self-care starts within.

The world sees your face, your skin and your behaviour, and judges you accordingly. Should you do the same? Or should you be more concerned about your inner body? From the helpful to the controversial, join medics, psychologists and artists in exploring human health and appearance.

Programme:

Precision medicine and personalised health
Dr Ella Maysami (Lecturer in Neuroscience, Keele University)
Personalised medicine and precision medicine have been used interchangeably in recent years, although there are distinctive differences between the two terminologies.
Personalised medicine addresses tailor-made healthcare for each patient, whereas precision medicine focuses on identifying efficient and effective therapeutic approaches based on genomics and environmental factors. During the Pint of Science session, I address these two topics and will discuss broader implications of research, e-health and AI that would help us achieve the best health and social care in our society.

Preferences for artificial faces and the inevitability of death
Dr Jenny Cole (Lecturer in Psychology, Keele University)
As the dust settles on the trend of posting AI-generated portraits of ourselves on social media, you may reflect and wonder why we all found this trend so compelling. What is it about seeing ourselves rendered by a computer that appeals to us? Social psychology has attempted to shed light on why we prefer artificial faces, and it all comes down to our uniquely human ability to contemplate our own mortality.

The beauty of skin tone

William Ntiamoah (Contemporary artist)

Join artist William Ntiamoah to find out more about the Skin Tones project. William will explore Skin Tones through a painting demonstration whilst talking and reflecting on the project itself. You will then be invited to join the painting process by adding your own brushstrokes to the painting with guidance!
