Exhibition: 'In Motif'

In Motif
at Chapter's Cafe, Keele University

As an artist, Charné Visser is drawn to the power of portraiture to capture the essence of a person, elevating their perceived importance and status. The act of creating a portrait is an act of recognition
and respect for the subject, and the way it is created can have a profound impact on how the person is perceived. In her work, she is particularly interested in exploring the use of pattern as a means of expressing the complex identity of South Africans.

South Africa is a country of great cultural diversity, reflected in the wide range of motifs and styles used in patterns. These patterns have played a role in traditional clothing and continue to be used
in contemporary art to express social and political messages. However, the representation of Africans in portraiture has also been influenced by historical and cultural factors, resulting in a range of depictions that reflect the complexities of power dynamics and cultural exchange between Europe and Africa. Through her work, Charné aims to create portraits that are honouring and empowering, while also celebrating the diversity and richness of South African culture.

As a South African-born artist with a degree in Fine Arts, Visser’s focus lies in portraiture predominantly rendered in oils or mixed media. Through her work, she explores themes of identity and representation and enjoys experimenting with various mediums and applications. While she strives for accurate visual representation, Visser balances realism with personal expression, resulting in works that are nuanced and
individualistic. She is currently based in Stoke-on-Trent, where she continues to create portraits and explore new mediums and techniques. Her studio is based at ACAVA Spode Works.
