Workshop: Making Textured Clay Pots

Join artist Zeba Imam for a relaxed session in making textured clay pots!

Learn to make a pot, shape it into a form you like and decorate it with colour and texture. We will explore hand building techniques such as coiling and pinching, the two oldest techniques used to form functional vessels. Working with white earthenware clay we will use our hands and clay tools to mould clay into the desired form. We will then apply colour slips and use stamps or found objects to create marks and patterns to bring your pot to life.

Workshops are free and open to all - children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.

This workshop is part of a series of free public workshops during the Three Counties Open Art exhibition, held at the historic Burslem School of Art in Stoke-on-Trent. Displaying the works of around 100 artists connected to Cheshire, Shropshire and Staffordshire, the show celebrates the creativity of the area in a range of mediums, styles and subject matter.

Open Tuesday-Saturday 11am-3pm daily.

Burslem School of Art is fully accessible, with Blue Badge parking at the front and rear of the building. If parking at the rear, please note that you will need to call the intercom to be buzzed in, and a member of staff will give you lift access via a key. The front of the building can be accessed by a ramp. If you have access needs and would like to let us know before your visit, please don't hesitate to email arts@keele.ac.uk or call 01782 731368.

About the artist

Zeba's work is inspired by the marks of human activity all around us such as the time-worn aspects of industrial buildings and casual graffiti. They convey the universal human wish to be seen and to communicate: “I am/was here.” Using white clays layered with colour slips, oxides and underglazes in various combinations of mark making, she intends to capture the layered, palimpsest-like, quality of the human story. Zeba graduated from Clay College, Stoke in 2019 and now work from her studio located at the Spode Works building in Stoke-on-Trent.
