What are your main responsibilities in your current job?

Ultimately, the goal of my job is to stop fraud before it happens.

My responsibilities are focused on minimising losses to the company by helping establish controls which counter malicious and fraudulent activity. Examples of such ‘controls’ could be risk profiles or system logics, and are achieved by deploying big data mining techniques and conducting extensive analysis of data to identify trends in fraudulent activity; and forecast future activity. I also deliver special reporting projects to monitor the behaviour of players and the performance of our agents around the globe.

Which skills are important for your job?

The ability to solve problems and analyse data in a high-pressure environment is essential. No work day is ever the same and good analytical skills are required to identify problems and trends quickly. Computer programming is a vital tool for this. I use Visual Basic in Excel to perform much of the difficult data reduction, calculation and visualisation, and even implement machine learning to identify relationships in seemingly random data.

What are the highlights of your job?

I am very proud to be working with such a reputable brand in the dynamic gaming industry. My job utilises the skills I developed as an astrophysics undergraduate at Keele University to identify and solve complex problems. The salaries and benefits for employees are very competitive. In addition to this The Stars Group also provide free/discounted tickets to various events, money towards studies and learning new skills, and the chance to attend VIP events around the world. For example, early this year I had dinner with riders of the famous Isle of Man TT and held the competition trophy. There is even the chance to attend the PokerStars Championship in the Bahamas each year.

How did you find your current job?

I found my current job on the Group’s career page (www.starsgroup.com/careers). I applied online by attaching my CV and filling in my personal/contact information, and received a response within days. Having a science degree from Keele University in such an interesting and analytical subject really set me apart from the crowd. If you find something that interests you, go ahead and apply!

Does your employer have a graduate recruitment scheme?

The Stars Group does not have a specific recruitment scheme for graduates but welcomes applications from individuals interested in working with such an exciting company on their career page (www.starsgroup.com/careers).
