Current Employment: Systems Test Engineer, BAe Systems, Warton UK
What are your main responsibilities in your current job?
As a systems integration engineer on the Eurofighter Typhoon contract, my main role is to test the highly complex computer systems of the aircraft in a rig environment. I am one of team of approximately 50 that is tasked with writing procedures to test the requirements, performing the tests themselves, and troubleshooting any issues that crop up along the way.
Which skills are important for your job?
Team-working and interpersonal skills are very important as I work with different members of the team on different shifts from week to week. I also work with customers (RAF etc.) and various suppliers. Problem solving and analytical skills also play a key role in the job.
What are the highlights of your job?
It is great fun testing the functions of a jet fighter. As it's such a complex aircraft there is a lot to get your head around, so you're learning all the time. There's also a lot of variety- you can be testing one thing on an early shift one week, then something different with other people in the team on a late shift the week after, quite a bit different from your standard 9 to 5! There are also opportunities to be seconded to RAF Conningsby and the partner companies in Spain, Italy and Germany.
