Year studied MSc Geoscience Research
Applied Environmental Science AND Music BSc
Field assistant at Oxitec ltd (Interexon)
What did you do after graduation and how did you get this job?
I worked in a Television store, then as an intern for an arts company for 3 months. I also started my own talent agency to help connect more local artistes with work in the entertainment industry. I got this job at Oxitec through a recruitment agency who did a call for anyone interested in assisting with a science based project. I applied and they hired me a few months after to work in the Cayman Islands office.
What does your job involve?
I rear GM mosquitoes from eggs to adults. At the pupation stage I have to sort them by sex, keeping the males and disposing of the females. The adult males are released into the wild in controlled quantities. I also have to monitor the progress of the released GM mosquitoes by collecting eggs from Ovitraps set out in the treated areas, then screen them for the fluroescent marker gene.
What did you learn on the MSc Geoscience Research which helped you get the job, or helps with your role now?
My work is still entry level and required very little training. Laboratory training during the MSc course is what really allowed me to start working without much training. I am still very under-utilized, though I appreciate my role in this tough economy (in the Cayman Islands)
Do you have any advice for current/prospective MSc Geoscience Research students interested in a similar career?
