Frequently asked questions
We understand that you will have lots of questions before you start your course at Keele. Hopefully lots of your questions will be answered here, but you can also get in touch with Student Services for any further queries.
Before you begin
Take a look at our Countdown to Welcome web pages and make sure to complete all the steps.
You may also want to take a look at your reading lists for your course (your school will tell you more about these), and familiarise yourself with the Keele Learning Environment (KLE) and Microsoft Teams.
If you haven't yet arranged your accommodation, please get in touch with the Accommodation team as soon as possible to discuss your options. You can contact the team at email@example.com.
If you will be living on campus, you will find lots of useful information about what will be provided and what you should bring with you on the Accommodation section on our Welcome web pages. You may want to create a checklist and tick items when you’ve packed them. Don’t forget your accommodation Boarding Pass which you’ll receive at the end of your online accommodation induction.
If you find that you’re unable to arrive at Keele on your pre-arranged date, you should contact the Accommodation team to let them know. You may also need to submit a notification of short-term absence on eVision (which you will find in the Keele Learning Environment) if you will be absent from in-person lab sessions or seminars. However, you should be able to attend online learning sessions from home.
During the Welcome period
There will be a range of activities for you to get involved in, designed to help you settle in and meet new people. There will be something for everyone - you’ll be spoilt for choice!
You will also attend virtual or in-person induction classes for your degree programme - this will be shown on your academic timetable once they are confirmed.
All events, both virtual and in-person, will shown in the Keele App - download it and take a look at the ‘what’s on’ calendar.
It’s natural to feel nervous if you don’t know anyone else on your course, but you will be in the same situation as most other new students and there are lots of opportunities to connect to new people before and after you arrive.
You can get talking to other new students on social media by joining Keele SU’s ‘Keele University Student Life 2020/21’ official Facebook group, and the KPA group if you’re a postgrad student.
There will be virtual events before and during Welcome to help you meet new people. In addition, you can join some of Keele SU’s many clubs and societies.
In response to the coronavirus pandemic, Keele University is implementing a five stage system (similar to the Government’s alert system) that will define what studying at Keele will be like for the 2020/21 academic year. The stage that we are at dictates which facilities and services will be open, and to what extent.
During your studies
Contact hours refers to the amount of time you will spend in lectures, seminars and lab sessions (including all online teaching methods). This will depend on your degree course and modules that you pick. You can contact your academic school for more information, or also look at the contact hours for specific modules.
The Student Services Centre provides a wide range of services to students including:
- Welfare support
- Money support
- Residence support
- Disability and dyslexia support
- International student support
- Counselling and mental health support
Students can also access free independent support from Advice and Support at Keele (ASK) in the Student Union.
If you develop any coronavirus symptoms (e.g. high temperature, new continuous cough, loss / change in your normal sense of taste or smell) then you must follow the current UK government guidance. If you will be living on campus, you should also follow the University's own guidance.
For any other illness, Keele Practice is a health centre on campus which provides NHS services. If you will be living on campus, you should register with Keele Practice before you start your course at Keele as part of the enrolment process to ensure that you are able to see a doctor or nurse if you fall ill.

If you are not happy with your room allocation then please speak to our Accommodation team in the first instance. You can request a room move, however please be aware that there will be a waiting list for room moves at the start of term.
The majority of students living on campus will not be eligible for a parking permit unless there are exceptional circumstances such as course placement requirements, medical or disability requirements, or primary caring responsibilities. If you are an off campus or commuting student you will be able to apply for a parking permit. Parking permits are allocated on a needs based application process to ensure that students with the greatest need can park on campus. There is also pay and display parking available on campus for students not eligible for a permit.
Make sure you give your friends and family the correct room address so that they can send you letters and parcels to help you settle in. Your address should be in the format: name, room number, block number, hall of residence and postcode:

Your post will be delivered to the post room on campus. You will need to take ID to collect any post.
You are welcome to invite your friends and family to visit you on campus or in the local area, but you must not allow any visitors into on-campus accommodation.
Student finance and money
It can take at least a week for your first payment to be received in your bank account after you've completed enrolment, therefore it's important to make sure you have sufficient money available for the first couple of weeks. If your student finance is delayed or if you have any other concerns, you could contact your student finance authority directly or you can speak to a money specialist in the Student Support team.
You should apply for Student Finance as soon as possible. It can take some weeks for Student Finance applications to be processed, and so you should try to ensure that you have enough savings in place to cover your living costs until your application is processed and you receive your first payment.
If you’re eligible for a bursary or scholarship, payments are made in January or February of each year. You will be notified by the end of semester one if you are eligible for the Keele Bursary or Excellence Scholarship.

This is difficult to estimate as this will depend on your individual circumstances, however as an approximate guide we recommend that you budget £80 per week in addition to your accommodation costs.
