I graduated in Economics and Politics from Keele in 1980 and the degree course was fantastic. Keele provides you with great opportunities educationally, but also to develop in so many ways including voluntary work. It is a strong community and that’s why it is number 1 for student satisfaction. Make the most of your time at Keele to put into practice the learning from the great team of tutors.
During my time at Keele I became a sabbatical officer of the Students’ Union (Secretary 1977/78) and Treasurer 1978/79. Following graduation, I worked first as a researcher for the President and General Secretary of the Engineering trades union (AEEU now part of UNITE) then 11 years (1986-1997) managing the TUC’s National Education Centre in North London. From 1997 to 2010, I was Member of Parliament for Gillingham, during which time I held Parliamentary Private Secretary roles and was also Transport Minster between 2008 and 2010. I now run my own consultancy which draws on the skills and experience of policy, government and communications experts to help organisations from a variety of industries and sectors communicate with Westminster and Whitehall and inform Central Government’s decision making processes. I remain involved with the University and since 2012 I have been a Lay Member of Council at University of Keele.
