I joined the academic staff of the then Physics Department in 1960 and apart from an academic year as Visiting Professor in the Physics Department at the University of Nimegen in the Netherlands (1977/78), I have spent almost my entire career at Keele. I took early retirement from full time work in 1988 and re-engaged part-time for the following 18 years. I was appointed Professor of Molecular Physics in 1990, and following on with research contracts with the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (DSTL) at Farnborough over the period 1994 to 2006 took the title Research Professor of Molecular Physics. I became Emeritus Professor in 2006.
My academic degrees are those of BSc (Physics), PhD (Electronics) and DSc (Engineering and Applied Science) all of which were received from Southampton University. Professional affiliations are those of the Institute of Physics (Fellow) and the Institute of Engineering and Technology (Fellow).
Research and scholarship
My current research interest is in the development of an efficient on-axis wideband radiant energy concentrator using reflective methods.
Former studies include: quantum electronics, especially the dynamics of molecular beam maser oscillators; molecular beam spectroscopy, carbon dioxide lasers, both traditional and waveguide types and their application to laser photoacoustic spectroscopy of trace gases and the vapours of essential oils; bulk gas and molecular jet iodine laser; pulsed broadband infrared thermal sources.
The scientific output of the above studies number upwards of 110 publications, many of which were with my research students (26 PhD, 10 MSc (by thesis). In addition I was an Associate Editor (with others) of Atomic and Molecular Beams, Vols. 1 and 2 published by Oxford University Press, Ed. G. Scoles, in 1988 and 1990 respectively.
