Biography

I arrived at Keele in November 1994 when I was appointed as the Starlink Computer Manager. I became a Lecturer in 2008 and I was promoted to Senior Lecturer in 2012.

Previously, I was a Postdoctoral Research Assistant at University College London where I also obtained my PhD in 1992 on The Atmospheric Parameters of Main Sequence A and F Stars.

Research and scholarship

My main area of research is stellar atmospheres, with particular interest in the various techniques which can be used to determine the temperatures, surface gravities and compositions of many types of stars. I have studied how the physics of convection can affect our perception of stellar parameters. I have a strong interest in chemically peculiar stars and, between 2000 and 2009, served on the International Astronomical Union Working Group on Ap and Related Stars. I'm one of Keele's members of the SuperWASP project looking for (and finding nearly 200) planets around other stars. I am a member of the Kepler and TESS Asteroseismic Science Consortium and member of the PLATO 2.0 work packages WP12230 on Fundamental Stellar Parameters, WP125200 on Incorporating classical parameters and WP123200 on Surface Convection.
