Biography

I got my PhD in Computer Engineering from the University of Palermo (Italy) in 2004, with a dissertation was on the application of fuzzy logic and market basket analysis to the classification of genomics and proteomics data. Part of the research was conducted between 2001 and 2003 at Tripos research lab in San Francisco (USA), studying machine learning methods applied to biological data analysis.

Later, I have been assistant professor at the Computer Engineering Dept. of the University of Palermo, where I taught Computer Networking, for undergraduates, and Formal languages and compilers, at Masters level.

In 2017 I was a visiting researcher under a Fulbright grant for a period of nine months at the Missouri University of Science and Technology (USA).

In March 2019 I joined Keele as a lecturer at the School of Computing and Mathematics where I currently work in the area of machine learning and artificial intelligence.

Research and scholarship

My research regards the design of smart systems for managing large amounts of data. My focus is in particular on the extraction of meaningful knowledge, by producing human interpretable models. 

In particular, I’m interested in:

  • structural knowledge extraction: resource-constrained devices (e.g. wireless sensor networks, wearable, IoT devices) are now commonly available and allow pervasive monitoring. In this context I’ve used methods of grammatical inference to infer interesting structural relationships among elements of large datasets, e.g. inferring high-level human activities from their trajectories.
  • explainable machine learning: high accuracy and good generalisation are not the only properties that is desirable to achieve when building models for ML. For instance, when such models are used to make high-stake decisions affecting human lives, they must be checked for the presence of hidden sources of bias. A well-known case it the controversial COMPAS system, which is used by U.S. courts to assess the likelihood of a defendant becoming a recidivist, and has been showed to contain unduly bias against some race groups. This line of research regards the study of methods to highlight the presence of potential bias in models, and to build alternative models, more easily interpretable by non-expert users.
