We carry out research in the areas of empirical software engineering, complex systems, computational systems, cloud computing, knowledge modelling, user-centred design (UCD), "Big Data" analytics, computing education and e-Learning and biological system design. We also have research interests in signal processing, cultural informatics, patient monitoring systems and in wearable and pervasive computing.

Our main research themes are Software Engineering, Systems & Usability Engineering, Complex Systems and we are also the academic base for the Keele Smart Energy Network Demonstrator.

Please see our staff and research members for contact information and a summary of our publications.

We are hosting the 33rd International BCS Human-Computer Interaction Conference 6th-10th July 2020. The Call for Papers is now published. We hope you can join us at Keele in July 2020!

We are always very happy to discuss research collaborations and PhD opportunities. Email enquiries are very welcome to the research group leader: Dr Sandra Woolley (
