Weston Road Academy year 9 students visit Keele University

On Wednesday 17 January 2018, 48 year 9 students and their teachers from Weston Road Academy, Stafford, visited Keele for a day of Maths workshops and activities.

Organised and led by Richard Stakes (Teaching Fellow, Computing and Maths and FMSP Area Coordinator) and Alice Fitzgerald (FMSP Assistant Area Coordinator) the day was funded by the Further Maths Support Programme and supported by Keele University and hosted at Keele Hall with the help of Carol Summerfield and the Keele Conference Team.

The students attended two workshops, “Winning Games - how understanding probabilities and understanding your opponent’s aims will give you an advantage” and “Logistics - how mathematics can help businesses that transport goods around road networks”, and also competed for prizes in our now nearly world-famous “Dragon Quiz”.

Two Keele Maths Ambassadors, Erin and Annie, gave the students a lunch-time tour of the campus, which clearly inspired many. We hope many of the students were encouraged to continue their studies of Mathematics beyond GCSE and to pursue STEM careers.
