In liaison with the Royal Instituion, Keele has run year 8 maths masterclasses for over 20 years. Sessions are currently running for the 2018 series, with over 90 students from 27 schools from Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, Cheshire and Shropshire are spending Saturday mornings immersed in Mathematics. Several members of the School of Computing and Mathematics have run sessions.
Dr David Bedford, the organiser, gave a talk on Seeing is Believing, Dr Colin Wright entertained and informed the audience with the maths of juggling, Richard Stakes presented students with some puzzles and Alice Fitzgerald got students thinking about the travelling salesman problem and its applications. Feedback from students has been very positive with some parents reporting that students are talking about the sessions all weekend!
