PROGRESS partnership

We are members and co-founder of the PROGRESS (PROGnosis RESearch Strategy) group. This group has highlighted the potential clinical impact of prognosis research and identified our key themes. This framework underpins research, teaching and training we conduct here at Keele.

Our key themes

  1. Overall prognosis research: describing the likely future course or outcome probability for a particular disease or health condition in the context of current diagnosis and treatment (describing prognosis) (PROGRESS 1)
  2. Prognostic factor research: identifying potential prognostic factors (biomarkers or other patient/disease characteristics) and investigating their association with future outcomes (explaining prognosis) (PROGRESS 2)
  3. Prognostic model research: developing, validating and investigating the impact of (statistical) models that use multiple prognostic factors in combination to predict the probability of future clinical outcomes in individual patients (predicting outcome) (PROGRESS 3)
  4. Stratified care research: identifying factors that predict differential response to treatment, and use this to tailor therapeutic decisions to individuals in order to maximise treatment benefit and reduce harm; investigating the clinical and cost-effectiveness of stratified care (PROGRESS 4
  5. The PROGRESS group has also highlighted the importance of transparent and complete study reporting and has recommended routine registration of all prognostic studies, linked to an accessible study protocol using agreed reporting guidelines: Improving the transparency of prognosis research: the role of reporting, data sharing, registration, and protocols.
