I completed my undergraduate degree in Psychology and History followed by an MA (by thesis) and a PhD at Keele University.  Having worked as a Demonstrator at Keele and a lecturer and Head of Section at Wolverhampton University I returned to Keele in 1989.  I am a Chartered Psychologist and an Associate Fellow of the British Psychological Society.  My main undergraduate teaching areas are in research methods and developmental psychology.  My main research interests lie in the fields of social development, student learning and counselling.  I am currently a member of the Research Institute for Life Course Studies.

I have been actively involved with quality assurance in psychology and was deputy chair of the British Psychology Society Graduate Qualifications and Accreditation Committee (GQAC).  I have acted as external advisor to undergraduate and postgraduate courses in psychology at a number of universities.  I have been a QAA subject specialist reviewer for psychology and acted as an external examiner on undergraduate or postgraduate psychology courses at Liverpool Hope University, Birkbeck College University of London, South Bank University, and Southampton Solent University.

I am a member of the Division for Teachers and Researchers in Psychology of the British Psychological Society and have completed SEDA accredited postgraduate certificate courses in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education (2002) and in Teaching with Technology (2004).  I have also completed a SEDA accredited programme in Developing Practice in External Examining (2010).  I am a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.  In 2009 I received a University of Keele Individual Award for Learning and Teaching Excellence.

In the past I have been Head of School, Director of Learning and Teaching, and Programme Director for undergraduate psychology in the School of Psychology.  I am currently First Year Tutor and am one of the Assessment Officers in the School of Psychology.
