Information for Single Honours BSc Psychology with Placement Year
Hi and a very warm welcome to the Single Honours BSc Psychology with Placement Year course. The psychology teaching team and I intend that the next four years will be full of discovery and excitement as you learn about all of the amazing discoveries and ideas within Psychology. Whether you are new to Keele or progressing from Foundation Year, it’s great that you are considering joining the Keele Psychology community!

The Single Honours Psychology with Placement Year BSc is designed to teach across the breadth of the psychology undergraduate curriculum, while offering opportunities to delve deeply into core areas as the course progresses. It provides an opportunity to fully immerse yourself in the discipline of psychology and to experience the teaching and research expertise of a large proportion of our academic staff over the three-year degree. This course shares all of the benefits of our Single Honours Psychology BSc course with the additional feature that students take a year out between Years 2 and 3 to gain experience working in an industrial placement. Such work experience is invaluable in forging a professional psychology career. The British Psychological Society accreditation requires that we follow a curriculum comprising eight key areas in psychology as follows: Social Psychology, Developmental Psychology, Cognitive Psychology, Biological Psychology, Individual Differences, Research Methods, Conceptual and Historical Issues, and a Final Year Project incorporating data collection and analysis. That makes this the ideal course from which to launch a career in any area of professional psychology.
Psychology with Placement Year student, Jodie Stubbs, is undertaking a placement year with the Lyme Trust, a charity based in Newcastle-under-Lyme, which aims to help the homeless in the local area. She has fully immersed herself in her placement and has been so insipired that she set up a campaign to help the homeless. Your course consists of a combination of compulsory and optional modules. Please see the course page for Year 1, 2 and 3 modules. You can view module descriptors, via the module selector, to give you further insight into the module content. Around half of modules are shared with students on other BSc Psychology routes. However, as a Single Honours BSc Psychology student, you have the chance to study a number of exclusive modules not available to Combined Honours students and you have access to a greater number of Optional modules. You will choose the optional modules you’d like to study when you begin your course.
Please note that staffing changes may lead to modules being removed or replaced.
Your degree course comprises 360 credits overall and each module is worth 15 credits (apart from the year-long Final Year Project 30-credit module). While on Placement you must take the non-credit bearing compulsory module “PSY-30131 Psychology with Placement Year”. This is a Level 6 module. Teaching and assessment
Teaching is by a combination of lectures, practical classes, and seminars, supplemented by individual meetings and supervision. You should, of course, attend all classes, meet all deadlines for coursework and attend scheduled examinations. Note that registers of attendance are used for many classes.
The programme is assessed through a range of formats including:
- formative and summative assessment
- laboratory reports (individual or group)
- personal blogs
- journal article critique
- multiple choice exams
Coursework is generally submitted electronically. Most coursework receives a mark out of 100. A mark of 70 or above is First Class, 60-69 is Upper Second Class, 50-59 is Lower Second Class, 40-49 is Third Class and a mark below is 40 is deemed to be a fail. Here’s some advice – when marked work is returned try not to focus solely on the mark, but instead read the written feedback from your marker. This is a key element of university teaching, shaping student work towards a professional ideal. It will congratulate on what you did well and offer concrete advice on how the work could be improved. Our external examiners regularly comment on the depth and helpfulness of the feedback our staff provide on student work. It is something that all staff take very seriously.
