Posted on 07 October 2014

Keele University has launched a new scheme to help young learners in the Stoke-on-Trent area who are interested in studying medicine at university.

Steps to Medicine @ Keele (Steps2Med) is a new opportunity for Year 12 students from the local area (Stoke-on-Trent and up to 30 miles radius) who are interested in applying to university to study medicine.

Throughout the scheme the young people will be provided with direct access to Medicine professionals, academics and undergraduate students. The scheme wants to recruit learners who will be successful at the university regardless of their educational and social background and therefore applicants will need to meet HEFCE’s Widening Participation requirements detailed on our terms & Conditions web page http://www.keele.ac.uk/outreach/termsandconditions/

The aims of the course are to:

a) Identify from the area students from a WP background with the potential to succeed in medicine .

b) To increase the students chances of success through e-mentoring and an application skills day.

c) To prioritise interviews and adjust grades in order to provide a level playing field when competing against applicants from selective and fee paying schools.

d) To ensure prior to application that students understand medicine as a career and the rigours of the course.

The content of the course will include:

a) E-mentoring provided by an existing medical student

b) A day learning how to deal with the application process and the interviews

c) A day attending the Medicine Careers Day (Free of charge)

d) A PBL event followed by the writing of a magazine style article

e) A meet the professionals’ day at the Skills Academy UHNS.

In order to be prioritised for interview the students will need to remain in contact with the e-mentor and attend at least three out of four events and complete the magazine style article.
