Violinist to launch New Vic and Keele Concerts Society partnership
A new partnership between the New Vic Theatre and Keele Concerts Society will be launched by internationally-renowned violinist Peter Cropper in July.
The partnership will present world-class performers, both at the theatre-in-the-round and at Keele University, promoting a mixed programme of internationally acclaimed chamber music.
The new initiative will be launched by leader of the legendary Lindsay String Quartet and co-founder of award-winning chamber music promoters, Music in the Round, violinist Peter Cropper. He will hand over the baton to the next generation of chamber musicians at a concert at the theatre-in-the-round on Wednesday 10 July featuring regular BBC 3 guests, Ensemble 360.
The New Vic pioneered chamber music presented in an informal setting at Hartshill’s Vic Theatre in the 1960s with Peter Cheeseman and the Lindsay String Quartet who were the then Ensemble in Residence at Keele University.
Keele Concerts Society forms part of Arts Keele at Keele University. The concert series presents an annual programme of chamber, early music, jazz and world music concerts, with well-established performers and young musicians and develops a range of interactive and educational music workshops with local schools and students at the University.
Peter Cropper said: “In 1970, when we were resident at Keele University, The Lindsays started Music and Ale in the then-called Old Vic Theatre. Fourteen years later, as a result of playing in-the-round at the Old Vic, we founded Music in the Round. So how appropriate it is that the New Vic and Keele are now working together with Music in the Round to keep the tradition alive in this wonderful in-the-round space. And it’s in the safe hands of Ensemble 360 who took over The Lindsays residency with Music in the Round when we retired in 2005. I hope it’s a partnership with a long future - it's all the legacy I could ask for.”
Kerry Jones of Keele Concerts Society, said: “Keele Concerts are really excited about the new partnership with the New Vic and having Peter Cropper at the event on the 10th will be absolutely wonderful. We are looking forward to next season and this great opportunity to continue the link between the University, The Lindsays and the New Vic.”
The concert on Wednesday 10 July will see Music in the Round’s brilliant resident ensemble joined on stage by Peter Cropper and will follow hot on the heels of Music in the Round winning the coveted Chamber Music and Song Award at the Royal Philharmonic Society Awards.
Tickets for Ensemble 360 and Peter Cropper on Wednesday 10 July are priced from £14 to £21 (concessions available) and are available by telephoning the New Vic Box Office on 01782 717962 or online at www.newvictheatre.org.uk.
