The three-day event, Teenage Kicks: The Representation of Youth Subcultures in Fiction, Film and Theory, will include film screenings and readings by novelists, as well as lectures and panel discussions by leading academics in subcultural studies.

Members of the public are invited to attend some of the sessions:

  • Alan Fletcher, screenwriter on Quadrophenia, and author of the The Mod-Crop Trilogy. 4pm-5pm on Thursday 11 July, in CBA1.102, Chancellor’s Building.
  • Don Letts, film-maker, BBC 6 Music DJ, and member of the band Big Audio Dynamite:  There will be a screening of his recent series of short films Subculture. Don will introduce the film and be taking questions afterwards. 6.30pm-8pm on Thursday 11 July, in CBA1.102, Chancellor’s Building.
  • Courttia Newland, author of several novels including The Scholar, Society Within, and The Gospel According to Cane. 5.30pm-6.30pm, Friday 12 July, in CBA1.102, Chancellor’s Building.

The conference is in association with the Keele University’s Humanities Research Institute, Keele Cultural Research Group, and the Subcultures Network: The Interdisciplinary Network for the Study of Subcultures, Popular Music and Social Change.

One of the organisers, Dr Nick Bentley, said: “Much work has been done in sociology, criminology, cultural studies and musicology to analyse subcultural identity and issues around youth, but comparatively little academic work has been done on the way in which youth subcultures have been represented in fiction and film. We are looking forward to welcoming leading researchers on these topics to Keele, as well as opening up discussions to the wider public.”

The conference will run in the Chancellor’s Building at Keele University from Thursday, July 11, to Saturday, July 13.
