"The aim of the Three Counties Open Photography competition and exhibition is to give photographers from Cheshire, Shropshire and Staffordshire the opportunity to show their work to new audiences."

Photographers from Cheshire, Shropshire and Staffordshire have been invited to submit entries for the Keele University Art Gallery's Three Counties Open Photography Competition, which is sponsored by architects and town planners, Hulme Upright Manning, of Stoke-on-Trent.

Photographers may submit up to three photographs in total for the Open Photography Exhibition Awards and could win a first prize of £300. There is also a second prize of £100 and third prize of £50.

There are also additional special awards, ‘The Focal Point Prize’, offered by the competition sponsors, Hulme Upright Manning, offers a £250 prize and there is also a prize of £150 for the best entry by a student (minimum age 16).

Hulme Upright Manning would like the winner of The Focal Point Prize, as part of their prize, to photograph a building designed by their practice. In return the resulting photograph would be incorporated into a variety of media used by Hulme Upright, which may include the practice's corporate literature, brochures, presentation material, reception and exhibition displays, website and media campaign, together with full acknowledgement of the photographer. Potentially this could lead to other exciting photography commission opportunities with the firm in the future.

The winning entries will be selected by an independent panel of judges will be headed by Dr Mike Maloney, OBE, FRPS, FBIPP, former Chief Photographer, Mirror Group of Newspapers. They will also make a final selection of photographs to be included in an exhibition at the University's Art Gallery, which will run from 18 February to 26 March 2010. This will provide a showcase for photographers in the area and also gives visitors the opportunity to see and buy from a wide range of selected original work.

Exhibition organiser, Marion Gidman, said: "The aim of the Three Counties Open Photography competition and exhibition is to give photographers from Cheshire, Shropshire and Staffordshire the opportunity to show their work to new audiences. This is the eighth exhibition at Keele for photographers in the region and I am confident that the standard of entry will be exceptionally high and will prove to be an outstanding attraction for gallery visitors. This exhibition is proving popular with photographers in the region and visitors to the gallery. The high standard of work reflects a wide range of styles and enthusiasm for the medium."

Receiving days for entries are: Thursday 27th (10 am to 1 pm) and Friday 28th January  (from 1 pm to 4 pm). Awards will be announced at the preview to the Open Photography Exhibition, which runs from 18 February to 26 March 2010.
