Overview

Medical students who wish to study for an intercalated masters degree in medical education recognise that when they qualify as clinicians they will be involved in teaching and supervising undergraduate and postgraduate students. There is a need for greater professionalism and accountability as clinical teachers and this course is designed to meet this need by providing a sound theoretical and practical basis for good teaching practice.

Career Destination Information

A Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Education is becoming a national standard for health professionals involved in teaching and is expected of new clinical teachers in the Keele University School of Medicine. Postgraduate Diploma and Masters level is appropriate to those who will be responsible for curriculum development and educational management within universities and NHS Trusts.

Aims of the Course

The overall aim of the course is to improve the quality and effectiveness of clinical teaching and medical education through:

  • Understanding and fostering a learner-centred approach
  • Relating this to the requirements of professional education for clinical competence
  • Developing practical, generic skills in teaching and assessment, underpinned by an understanding of educational theory
  • Promoting reflective practice in education and clinical practice, using work-based assignments and a portfolio
  • Promoting evidence-based education

The programme’s aims and values embody those of the Higher Education Academy (HEA) and successful participants will qualify as Fellows of the HEA with the post-nominal FHEA. The course is also scoped to the GMC document 'Recognising and Approving Trainers'.

Entry Requirements

The programme is designed for graduate (or equivalent) health professionals preparing for, or currently engaged in, clinical teaching. Entry routes will be flexible and designed to recognise appropriate prior experience and introductory courses. Please contact the School for detailed information and to check whether your own experience and professional development is appropriate for entry.

 

Application Procedure for Keele Students

To undertake an intercalated degree, students must be given permission by the School of Medicine as well as being offered a place on their chosen course.  Permission is granted following a short interview with an intercalation panel. Decisions will be based on the student’s academic record overall and on their motivation for undertaking the intercalated degree. The presence of a resit examination on the student’s academic record will not necessarily prevent them being granted permission to intercalate and decisions will be made on a case-by-case basis, following the interview process.

  • Please note that should permission to intercalate be granted by the interview panel, students will still need to apply independently to the course of their choice.
  • Students who are given permission to intercalate should have passed all their assessments by the time they commence their intercalated degree.
  • Intercalating students will be given access to their cohort's Blackboard, in order for them to stay in touch with their year's activities.

 

Application Procedure for External Students

Applicants should seek permission to intercalate from their own medical school prior to applying to Keele. Applicants will then be processed centrally by the University Admissions Office and Postgraduate Medicine. The decision regarding acceptance of an applicant will be made by the Course Director.

Course Content

The full Masters programme requires satisfactory completion of 180 credits, 120 credits made up from taught modules and the other 60 credits from a Masters dissertation.  The first four modules comprise the Certificate (60 credits) and are compulsory. The second four modules are 'optional' and chosen from seven, although the Research Methods module is compulsory for intercalating students progressing to a dissertation. The timetable for the course is flexible and can be built to suit individuals over an academic year. All intercalating students will be given a personal supervisor as well as a research supervisor and regular meetings are held over the year. 

Students wishing to receive accreditation for training for the Faculty of Sexual and Reproductive Health should select the Keele University and Faculty of Sexual & Reproductive Health Postgraduate Course in Medical Education when applying.

 

Compulsory Modules (comprising the Postgraduate Certificate)

 

  • Introduction to Medical Education (15 credits)
  • Teaching Methods and Theories of Learning (15 credits)
  • Assessment in Medical Education (15 credits)
  • Educational Supervision and Feedback (15 credits)

 

Optional Modules (with the PG Certificate modules, comprising the Postgraduate Diploma)

 

Select four from the following 15 credit modules:

 

  • Developing Professional Skills and Attitudes

  • Introduction to Research in Medical Education

  • Independent Study Module

  • Media Design

  • Curriculum Design and Session Planning

  • Simulation in Medical Education

  • Advanced Assessment module

 

60-credit Masters Project

 

This may be research or 'desk' based. The School has a number of defined projects or students can write their own research proposal.

Teaching and Assessment

The course will include a variety of teaching methods including small group teaching, peer observations of teaching practice, completion of a portfolio and personal study.  Some course elements will be in distance learning format. The overall structure will be flexible to allow participants to complete individual course units at different times, using the portfolio as a personal planner and record of achievement.

Module 1 of the Certificate will be assessed by a portfolio of evidence, relating to prior experience, taught courses, reflection and observation of teaching. Remaining modules will be assessed by assignments, generally in written format, and with a choice of subject areas, along with specific project work associated with some modules.

Additional Costs

Apart from additional costs for text books, inter-library loans and potential overdue library fines we do not anticipate any additional costs for this postgraduate programme.
