Postgraduate Research Programmes

Building research capacity in the content, delivery and configuration of long-term conditions is a priority for the School. We have a thriving PhD programme, and a large group of MPhil and PhD students, working in a supportive research environment. Well-funded bursaries are offered to undertake PhDs in our core research programme, and are regularly advertised (usually in January / February each year).

Full and part time

We offer established MPhil and PhD programmes which link in with these core programmes of research, which are underpinned by our expert knowledge in specialist areas such as general practice, physiotherapy, rheumatology, cardiology, public health, and mental health. To complement this, we have internationally renowned teams who provide expertise in a wide range of methodological approaches such as clinical trials, epidemiology, biostatistics, systematic reviews, 'big data' and social science methods.

The Wellcome Trust PhD programme unites four of the strongest departments in primary care, bringing together expertise in a wide range of methodologies and covering the most important clinical areas. The four host departments, Keele University, University of Cambridge, University of Oxford and Southampton University, are leading members of the NIHR School for Primary Care Research and have a strong track record in collaborative and developing clinical academic careers.

This PhD programme supports primary care clinicians through high-quality training in international renowned applied research units and supporting capacity development in a critically important but still under-resourced field.
