Biography

I joined the Centre for Health Planning and Management at Keele University in 1993 following completion of an MSc in Statistics at the University of Kent at Canterbury.

In 1997 I was awarded a NHS Executive (West Midlands) New Blood Research Training Fellowship during which I studied for a PhD in Medical Statistics jointly within the Centre for Health Planning and Management, and the Department of Mathematics.

I was awarded the PhD in 2000 and in the same year moved to the Arthritis Research UK Primary Care Centre. Since then I have focused on research in musculoskeletal conditions, and particularly analysis of electronic health record information and cohort survey data. I was promoted to Professor of Biostatistics in 2015.

Research and scholarship

My research focuses on the epidemiology of musculoskeletal conditions and symptoms in primary care. I have a specific interest in the use of routinely recorded electronic primary health care data, including its linkage to self-reported data with consent of research participants.  This includes methods to define phenotypes, exposure and prognostic factors, and outcomes in medical record data; to investigate the burden (incidence, prevalence, impact) of health conditions over time; to determine trajectories of symptoms to monitor chronic conditions and/or to predict long-term outcomes; and to investigate the benefits and harms of treatments using observational data.

I am principal investigator for research using a regional electronic primary care database (CiPCA). Our medical record research including details of CiPCA can be found here: www.keele.ac.uk/mrr.

Statistical interests include applications in primary care research of methodologies such as latent class analysis, multilevel modelling, and clinimetrics.

Teaching

I teach on the Masters in Medical Science Statistics and Epidemiology, and Research Methods modules.
