Biography
I graduated in Medicine from Manchester in 1985 and qualified as a GP in 1991 gaining membership of the Royal College of General Practitioners in 1992. I'm a 'local boy' who returned to my roots as a full-time Principle in General Practice in 1992. I continue working part-time as a clinical academic GP at Mayfield Surgery in Longton which was a founding member of the Keele GP Research Partnership.
I have worked at Keele since 2000, gaining my MD in 2006. From 2009 I held the post of NIHR General Practice Clinical Lecturer and became Senior Lecturer in General Practice in 2014. My research interests have expanded to include primary care management of chronic knee pain, analgesic and opioid use in chronic musculoskeletal pain, and the use of Smartphone devices in predicting long-term health outcomes in patients with chronic pain. The latter project has recently received funding from the NIHR School of Primary Care Research. My work has been widely cited, and supports primary care practitioners' in their diagnosis and management of chronic knee pain.
Research and scholarship
Has undertaken research into the use of aspirin in populations at risk from ischaemic heart disease. Developed a body of work investigating the epidemiology of the management of chronic knee pain and osteoarthritis in primary care.
Was awarded the BMA Doris Hillier Award (2006) for research in arthritis to investigate the factors associated with consultation for knee pain, in particular the affect that co-morbid disease has.
In 2010 the NIHR School for primary care research awarded a grant for research to investigate the factors which influence use of analgesics in musculoskeletal pain.
Teaching
Teaches on the Evidence Based (EBM) medicine module of the MMedSci at Keele University. Additionally contributes to teaching EBM to general practice registrars, and local GPs on the yearly Keele EBM course.
Currently supervising a PhD studentship.
