Biography

Emma undertook her undergraduate medical training (MBChB) and intercalation in the History of Medicine (BMedSc) at the University of Birmingham, completing her studies in 2008. She started on the North Staffs vocational GP training scheme in 2010 and was awarded a NIHR Academic Clinical Fellowship. During Emma's training, she completed the Diploma in Medical Studies and started her doctoral studies in 2012. During her training Emma was awarded the RCGP Midland Faculty Associate in Training Award and the RCGP Great Expectations Bursary.

Emma was funded by an NIHR In-Practice Fellowship between 2014-2017 and has recently started a SPCR GP Progression Fellowship in order to allow her to complete her doctoral studies.

Emma is an RCGP Clinical Advisor and is also a district representative on the RCGP Midland Faculty.

Emma is a GP representative on the NICE OA guidelines committee (2019-2021).

Research and scholarship

Emma is currently undertaking a series of linked studies as part of her PhD, which involve secondary analysis of cohort data, a systematic review, a new cross-sectional and observational daily diary study concerned with flare-ups in knee osteoarthritis. The findings of these studies will help improve episode management of flare-ups and inform larger scale studies looking at triggers and predictability of pain.

Emma has also undertaken methodological training in qualitative research.

Emma's research projects include:

  • Significant pain variability in person with, or at high risk of, knee osteoarthritis: preliminary investigation based on secondary analysis of cohort data
  • Defining acute flares in knee osteoarthritis: a systematic review
  • The natural history of flare-ups in osteoarthritis: descriptive findings from a prospective daily diary study
  • Patient-led non-pharmacological management of ACuTe FLAREs of knee osteoarthritis in primary care settings: the ACT FLARE feasibility and pilot study
  • Getting a better view of Osteoarthritis Trajectories and Variability (OA-TV): a systematic review and stakeholder engagement

Teaching

Emma is involved with teaching public health modules to undergraduate students at Keele University and is a Personal Development Tutor.

Further information

Emma is a GP in Wolverhampton. She is also a Training Programme Director for North Staffordshire GP trainees and Leadership Lead for the West Midlands GP School.
