Biography

Lizzie undertook her MBChB medical degree at The University of Manchester, completing her clinical years at Keele University and graduating in 2006 with honours. She has worked in North Staffordshire ever since.

Lizzie first started working at the centre in 2007 during her NIHR Academic Foundation Year 2 post and has since completed her GP training as an NIHR Academic Clinical Fellow, and completed her PhD as a GP Research Fellow and was awarded an NIHR Academic Clinical Lecturer in Primary Care post in 2016.

Lizzie is now a GP Partner at Wolstanton Medical Centre in North Staffordshire and a Senior Lecturer in General Practice. Her practice was awarded the status of the first Keele University Academic General Practice in July 2017. Lizzie was awarded a Diploma of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (DRCOG) in 2010, a Diploma of the Faculty of Sexual and Reproductive Health (DFSRH) in 2011 and a Diploma in Medical Sciences (DMedSci) in 2012.

Other roles that Lizzie holds include being a member of the NIHR HTA Panel A (previously the Primary Care, Community and Preventive Interventions (PCCPI) Panel), member of the Institute’s EDI (formally Athena Swan) Committee and the REF case study group and a member of the SPCR Organisation and Delivery of Primary Care Working Group.

Research and scholarship

Lizzie undertook a PhD at Keele University, researching the attitudes, beliefs and behaviours of GPs regarding exercise for chronic knee pain. This included a systematic review and a national questionnaire study investigating the attitudes, beliefs and behaviours of UK GPs.
During Lizzie's PhD she also undertook a realist synthesis examining successes and failures in concurrent learning about, and healthcare delivery for, multimorbidity in primary care.

Lizzie's post-doctoral research focus is primarily on management of osteoarthritis and osteoporosis and the delivery of high quality care in the primary care setting. She has experience in undertaking service evaluations of both newer models of primary care, including technologies such as text-message systems, and newer roles within the primary care workforce (e.g. Physician Associates and First Contact Practitioners).

Lizzie works with the Institute’s implementation team, within the Impact Accelerator Unit, within this role she was PI on an international implementation project (JIGSAW-E) that aimed to improve primary care management of osteoarthritis in 5 countries across Europe.

Teaching

Lizzie has supported Keele medical students since graduating, initially providing career support. Currently she is a medical student Personal Development Tutor and the lead GP in the practice for teaching medical students.

Lizzie has supported the delivery of both undergraduate and postgraduate evidence based practice and/or quality improvement modules. Within the implementation project, JIGSAW-E, Lizzie has delivered training on the management of osteoarthritis in primary care to primary care nurses in Shropshire and Staffordshire. Within her Senior Lecturer role, Lizzie is supporting clinical academics working at Keele, including the Academic Foundation Programme doctors and the Primary Care Wellcome PhD Fellows. Lizzie co-leads the local Evidence Based Practice GP group at Keele University.
