Biography
Dr Roddy graduated from the University of Nottingham in 1997 and subsequently undertook training in general medicine in Nottingham and Western Australia and rheumatology in the East Midlands. He undertook his doctoral thesis under the supervision of Professor Michael Doherty at the University of Nottingham, researching the epidemiology and treatment of gout in primary care.
Ed came to Keele in 2007 as a Clinical Lecturer in Rheumatology. He was promoted to Senior Lecturer in 2011 and then Reader in 2017. He works clinically as an Honorary Consultant Rheumatologist at the Haywood Hospital, Midlands Partnership NHS Foundation Trust. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians.
He is co-lead for Keele’s inflammatory conditions research programme, director of the Keele-Haywood Academic Rheumatology Group and provides medical leadership for Keele CTU.
Research and scholarship
Dr Roddy leads cohort studies and clinical trials in gout and common foot/ankle problems such as osteoarthritis and plantar heel pain. He is also Chief Investigator for trials of corticosteroid injections for carpal tunnel syndrome and hip osteoarthritis. He leads a programme of work investigating the associations of gout with comorbidities in the Clinical Practice Research Datalink. His work has been funded by Arthritis Research UK, and the NIHR Research for Patient Benefit Programme and School for Primary Care Research.
Ed supervises PhD students, intercalated medical student MPhils, Academic Foundation trainees, Academic Clinical Fellows and undergraduate student projects. He has published over 100 peer-reviewed publications and contributed to over £10million in grant income. Current active research collaborators include researchers in Australia, New Zealand, Sweden, and the USA, as well as across the UK.
Teaching
Dr Roddy leads Keele CTU’s annual 4-day short course: ‘Practical Introduction to Running Randomised Clinical Trials’.
He teaches throughout the undergraduate medical curriculum and on the MSc Rheumatology Nursing at Keele. He previously led a 4-week Student Selected Component in research methods for undergraduate medical students. He also undertakes clinical teaching for GPs, hospital physicians, podiatrists, and physiotherapists, and contributes to West Midlands regional rheumatology speciality registrar study days. He led the British Society for Rheumatology’s first-ever gout course in 2015.
Ed has given numerous invited lectures at regional, national and international meetings and co-authored over 30 book chapters, review articles and editorials. He is currently lead author for the Crystal Arthropathies module of the European League Against Rheumatism (EULAR) online course.
