The following is a list of just some of the technological and media tools utilized at the School of Nursing and Midwifery for the benefit of both our staff and students. We have included a brief description of the systems/software implemented, how it directly benefits and improves learning within the School and which of our dedicated staff members you can consult to book each tool OR receive more information about how to effectively use the tool to enable your teaching or your learning.

AnyMeeting

What is it?

AnyMeeting is a web-based software application that allows you to plan, promote, distribute, deliver and ultimately analyse your own online conferences for the purpose of individual or group development.

 

How does it assist me?

AnyMeeting’s wide applicability in video, web, phone conferences and webinars make it a very useful piece of software. It allows an approachable and navigable online platform to collaborate with students and staff, conduct presentations, conduct online support and training and record video content. Enjoy the productivity and cultural benefits of face-to-face collaboration without the cost or inconvenience of travel.

eAssessments

What is it?

eAssessments is an iPad app that can used for marking and providing feedback (either written or audio) for practical assessments or other sessions where marking of student performance is required. Marks and feedback are stored on a server so that students can access them easily using a web page.

 

How does it assist me?

Marking sheets can accommodate Pass/Fail or categorical marking, and there is also support for bespoke rubrics. This app has been used for Communications Assessment, Medications Administration, Oral Case Study Presentations, and Selection Day groupwork activities.

KLE (Keele Learning Enviroment)

What is it?

Blackboard, Keele’s Virtual Learning Environment (KLE) is a vital resource for any student or staff member at Keele University. It can be accessed from the Keele homepage. It acts as a portal for key online services at Keele, including eVision, particular course/module information and the method of submitting assessment work.

 

How does it assist me?

Students can access reference materials, handouts, reading lists, web links and activities anytime, anywhere (as long as you have internet access). The KLE also allows for web-based presentations and tutorials, it aids discussions and collaborative work with other students (campus-based and Distance Learners) and tutors via discussion forums, wikis and blogs and it facilitates the completion and submission of assignments. Furthermore, this vital tool allows tracking and monitoring of students' access and progress through the course, reduces the need for paperwork and printed handouts, allows for content to be updated easily and provides an easy way to inform course members about course information, announcements and deadlines

LabTutor

What is it?

LabTutor is an interactive simulator that allows you to engage students with self-guided, interactive exercises in and out of the classroom. With LabTutor you can create and manage feature-rich courses and conduct lessons either in a traditional laboratory setting, or over the web. Students engage in hands-on learning by recording and analysing their own biological signals and work through exercises supported by video, audio, quizzes and other fun ways of learning.

 

How does it assist me?

Students are intuitively guided through exercises, navigating from objectives and background information, to measurement and evaluation of physiological data, through to final analysis and report. It also allows you to alter existing content or create your own LabTutor learning module. Teachers can also make the most of contact time with students. Administrators can easily manage any number of courses and students.

PebblePad

What is it?

PebblePad is a Personal Learning System which is used to build your own electronic portfolio (e-portfolio) of records  - ie you can create, store, and review a range of files and other records, which you can then present to others as an e-portfolio (in PebblePad this is called a webfolio). You may also share documents, images, videos, and sound files, with tutors, other students, mentors, potential employers, or anyone else you might choose to share with.

 

How does it assist me?

PebblePad exists as an effective tool to reflect on the way you learn, keep a record of, and to reflect on, what you have learned and prepare you for future employment.

SafeMedicate

What is it?

An e-learning solution for developing and assessing competence for safe drug calculations. SafeMedicate provides healthcare institutions the tools to periodically assess prescription competence amongst students and pro-actively manage risk associated with medication error. Diagnostic assessments quickly and accurately identify any skill deficits and direct practitioners to self-paced interactive learning appropriate to their needs.

 

How does it assist me?

SafeMedicate is designed to develop and assess the competencies required for safe medication dosage calculation at the point of registration and beyond. It assists in the understanding of the essential clinical features of dosage and rate problems, developing the computation skills required to accurately calculate dosages and IV infusion rates and accurately measure the dose or rate using typical administration vehicles. You may practice at your own pace and continually assess and evaluate your learning and understanding.

SimMan

What is it?

The SimMan is a portable and advanced patient simulator for team training. SimMan (and its similar devices) has a realistic full body anatomy, comprehensive clinical functionality, is easy to operate and allows you to build accurate and advanced scenarios and events with precise clarity to meet learning objectives.

 

How does it assist me?

SimMan can be used to teach the core skills of airway, breathing, cardiac and circulation management through simulation-based education. In doing so, students are challenged via their clinical and decision making skills during realistic patient care scenarios. SimMan then generates a reflective debriefing view that combines event logs with synchronised recordings of the patient monitor and in-room video.

SMOTS

What is it?

SMOTS (Scotia Medical Observation and Training System) is a form of simulation technology that allows instant two-way communication in observation and training scenarios in the field of Nursing and Midwifery. Granting secure and constant video and audio interaction, SMOTS further allows you to file your recordings for instant playback.

 

How does it assist me?

Recognised as a valuable tool in medical education and clinical research, it is now recognised also as a valuable tool for training medical professional and ensuring the highest levels of patient safety. It is applicable in many fields such as intensive care, high dependency units, baby care units and many more. SMOTS is arguably the most effective reflective tool available in simulation training, allowing immediate observation within the field to assist in the growth and improvement of learning in the medical field.

Socrative

What is it?

Socrative is a student response system that empowers teachers to engage their classrooms through a series of educational exercises and games via smartphones, laptops, and tablets. 

 

How does it assist me?

Teachers login through their device and select an activity which controls the flow of questions and games. Students login with their device and interact in real time with the content. Student responses are visually represented for multiple choice, true/false and short answer questions. For pre-planned activities a teacher can view reports online as a Google spreadsheet or as an emailed Excel file.

StudioCode

What is it?

StudioCode is a clinical training tool and assessment system that enables Medical Simulation professionals to capture, tag, analyse, review, publish and share video content quickly and securely. It is a complete video analysis and digital media management tool. This unique teaching tool enables you to assign workflows and tags to any video content. Once categorized this data becomes a powerful resource as it can be searched, viewed, analysed, distributed and published.

 

How does it assist me?

With StudioCode, more information than ever before is available to assist medical educators and trainers to increase training effectiveness, efficiency and patient safety. Advanced medical initiatives, such as healthcare simulation, enables teams and individuals to develop insight and learn new skills in a realistic risk free environment. Medical researchers have access to extensive data and StudioCode empowers users to view and review, compare, compile, analyse and collaborate.

TurningPoint

What is it?

TurningPoint is an audience response system that allows you to poll your audience live with the use of remotes.  This allows you to ask questions of the audience without them feeling foolish for answering wrongly.  You are also able to set quizzes as individuals or as group, and you can split your results based on demographics. The TurningPoint dashboard offers one, simple interface for instant management of polling, content, participants, sessions and reports. It creates a versatile solution for assessment delivery and data collection within Nursing and Midwifery education.

 

How does it assist me?

TurningPoint allows educators to obtain an accurate yet confidential reflection of learning or opinion amongst a teaching group which can then be utilized to understand learning progress or as an aid for subsequent improvement.
