Media Guidelines for Staff
The PR & Communications Team
The PR & Communications team is responsible for all media relations for Keele University in order to enhance the University’s regional, national and international reputation. Our work with the media includes:
• Highlighting research and achievements by Keele staff and students
• Working with colleagues to manage responses to media enquiries, including crisis communications and reaction to major incidents
• Responding quickly to requests for expert comment and securing media opportunities for our academics
Dealing with media enquiries
The University's Communications Team is the first point of contact for most media enquiries, however academics are sometimes approached by journalists directly.
If so, please let us know so that we can liaise with the journalist and ensure that the interview goes as smoothly as possible. Letting us know also helps us to track where the interview or comment is used, and means that we can follow-up with the journalist at a later date.
Please also refer the journalist to us if the media enquiry is not relevant to your area of work, as there may be somebody else who is able to comment instead.
Contacting the media
Proactive contact with the media should always be made via the PR & Communications team – please get in touch if you need any help.
If you have an idea for a news story or press release then please contact us. We will work with you to draft the release and target appropriate media.
If an external body (e.g. a funding council or academic journal) is issuing a press release about your work, please let us know as soon as possible before the release is issued. This will help us deal with any enquiries from journalists arising from the release.
