Klarafestival 2016

Dr Nicholas Reyland (Music & Film Studies) gave a keynote public lecture at Klarafestival, Brussels on Sunday 13 March. Klarafestival is Belgium’s only broadcasting festival devoted to classical music, and aims to bring music and cultural discourse of the highest quality to a wide audience within the framework of an annual theme. 2016’s theme is suffering. An expert on filmscoring and Polish music, Dr Reyland gave an illustrated lecture, ‘Be there for the other’, on the role of Zbigniew Preisner’s music in Krzysztof Kieslowski’s Decalogue – a landmark TV serial, by one of Poland’s leading directors of the 1980s and 90s, exploring themes arising from the Ten Commandments. The lecture preceded screenings of two episodes of the Decalogue and a sold-out concert of Zbigniew Preisner’s music for Kieslowski’s films. Dr Reyland also spoke live on Belgian radio before the concert, and was interviewed by American radio for a feature about the festival. Dr Reyland has published widely on the Kieslowski-Preisner collaborations, not least in his 2013 monograph on the Three Colours trilogy.
