Study design

A prospective cohort study of consecutive patients consulting with low back pain in 8 general practices in North Staffordshire and Central Cheshire. Participating patients were sent questionnaires at baseline, 3 months, 6 months with a final questionnaire at 12-month follow-up. Consenting patients’ medical records were reviewed. A sub sample of patients took part in a linked interview study. Initial data collection took place between September 2004 and April 2006. Long-term follow-up (questionnaire based) data collection began in June 2010 (approximately 5 years post original BeBack); patients received a baseline questionnaire, monthly questionnaires, with completion of 12 month data collection in June 2011.

Objectives

  • To describe the illness perceptions of primary care patients with non-specific low back pain.
  • To investigate whether changes in illness perceptions differ according to clinical outcome.
  • To determine if illness perceptions are associated with clinical outcome.
  • To investigate the distinctiveness of different psychological constructs as predictors of outcome.
  • To describe the long-term course of low back pain.
  • To investigate the influence of comorbid conditions, social and psychological factors on the long-term course.
