International entry requirements

The following information is for applicants with Overseas qualifications and/or classed as Overseas for fees.

Applications are welcomed from students resident outside the European Economic Area (EEA) and Switzerland for tuition fees purposes to the A100 and A104 programmes. However, you should be aware that we have a strict quota for numbers of overseas students.

All applications must be submitted via the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS). The deadline for submissions is 15th October for entry in September the following year or deferred one year after.

Please note that tuition fees for Overseas students starting in 2019 are likely to increase significantly. We advise potential applicants to check they are able to commit to paying these fees before application. 

For 2019 entry Overseas Applicants to either the 5-year medicine degree (A100) or Health Foundation year (A104)* must meet all entry requirements as follows:

  • English Language requirements - Applicants from the European Economic Area and overseas who do not offer GCSE English Language at the required grade must have one of the following:
    • Grade B or above in the Certificate of Proficiency or Advanced Certificate in English offered by Cambridge English under the English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) programme
    • International English Language Testing Service (IELTS, academic standard) with a minimum score of 7.0 in each component taken at the same sitting
    • Grade B in International GCSE (IGCSE) First Language English, with a minimum of grade 2 in Paper 5 (optional Speaking & Listening component).
  • Those who are Overseas for fees must sit the BioMedical Admissions Test (BMAT) in the year they submit an application.

Applicants meeting the academic criteria will be ranked on their BMAT score for interview.

 *Those not taking the science streams may consider applying for Health Foundation Year entry (A104). All applicants to the 5-year medicine degree (A100) or the Health Foundation Year (A104) must sit the BMAT test in the year of application.

 

As a guideline, all applicants classed as Overseas for fees will be required to achieve

Overseas Fee Status Graduates (A100)

A Levels Equivalent        BBB     Must include 2 sciences or 1 science and maths or statistics.

Overseas Fee Status - Health Foundation Year (A104)

This course is for applicants from a non-science background. Overseas applicants may ONLY apply for our Health Foundation Year if they have NOT studied sciences to A level or above.

UCAS form guidance

All applications must be submitted via the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS). The deadline for submissions is 15th October 2017 for entry in September 2018 or deferred entry in September 2019.

Please give us as much detail as you can about exams that you have taken overseas. 

Applicants will be expected to provide evidence of the equivalence of their qualifications; this should be sent directly to the Admissions Office after submitting a UCAS application.

We advise you to contact the Admissions Office before applying, giving as much detail as you can about exams that you have taken and are due to take overseas to ensure that they are acceptable.

Please note that our degree may not give any exemptions to those examinations required to practise medicine overseas.

We reserve the right to reject applications that are either incomplete or completed incorrectly. Applicants are reminded that they are required to declare all qualifications that have been completed, including those that were failed, in their UCAS application. If you are found to have withheld information on qualifications we shall cancel your application and inform UCAS.

Your application will be assessed on the information provided in the UCAS application and your BMAT score. We will not accept any additional supporting material (e.g. CVs, work portfolios, letters of recommendation) unless we have specifically requested it from the individual applicant. We will not alter decisions on the basis of telephone calls, e-mails, or letters providing details that were not included in the original application. We will not discuss individual applications with anybody other than the applicant unless we have express written authorisation from the applicant to do so (see Feedback after application).

All interviews are currently held at Keele University in the UK. Applicants should therefore expect to travel to interview.

 

English Language Requirements

English Language Requirements

Overseas applicants not offering GCSE or Level 1/2 Certificate (first language) English Language at the required grade must have one of the following:

  • Grade B or above in the Certificate of Proficiency or Advanced Certificate in English offered by the University of Cambridge under the English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) programme
  • International English Language Testing Service (IELTS, academic) with a minimum score of 7.0 in each component taken at the same sitting
  • Grade B in International GCSE (IGCSE) First Language English, with a minimum of grade 2 in Paper 5 (optional speaking & listening component).

Students with other English language qualifications may be required to undertake IELTS to fulfil the requirements of both the School of Medicine and UK Visas & Immigration (UKVI).

We do not normally accept Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) qualification.
