Searching Databases

Bibliographic Databases

In some cases the full-text of an article will be available directly from your search results to view online. If the full-text isn't available from your search results, look for the @Keele logo and click this. This will search all our e-journal collections and provide a link to the whole paper if available, or direct you to where a paper copy may be found in the Library's print journal collection. 
Items not available either online or in print can usually be obtained for a fee through the Inter-Library Loan Requests service.

Web of Science
Search a variety of databases including Web of Science Citation Index (multi-disciplinary scientific) and Derwent Innovations Index (engineering). Our Web of Science Quick Guide will help you get started. Click here for off-campus access.

Leading scientific database offering journal articles and book chapters. Our ScienceDirect Quick Guide will help you get started.

ProQuest Technology Research Database
This database indexes world literature on technology and applied science, including materials science, aerospace engineering, mechanical engineering, civil engineering, condensed matter physics, computer science and electronic engineering. It incorporates Materials Research Database with METADEX, Engineering Research Database, High Technology Research Database with Aerospace and all of their sub files. Searching for Journal Articles

Electronic Journal Collections

The Library subscribes to a number of searchable e-journal collections with full-text access available as indicated. You can directly access articles from specific publishers and journals by browsing these collections.

IEEE Xplore Digital Library
Provides full-text access to high quality literature in technology. IEEE Xplore contains full-text documents from IEEE journals, transactions, magazines, letters, conference proceedings, standards, and IET (Institution of Engineering and Technology) publications. For off-campus access click here, select Keele from the list of institutions then enter your university login details.

Institute of Physics (IOP) Journals
Access more than 50 peer-reviewed physics and technology journals.

Digital archive of over 1,000 academic journals covering the sciences, social sciences and humanities. Our JSTOR Quick Guide will help you get started. Click here for off-campus access.

Oxford Journals
A collection of more than 250 electronic journal titles from Oxford University Press with full-text access from 1996 to the latest issue for all titles. To access articles from off-campus, you need to search for the journal title first and the article you want to look at before it will prompt you to log-in.

SAGE Journals
Over 600 peer-reviewed, full text journals with coverage dating back to 1999.

Taylor & Francis Online
Over 1,500 journals covering a range of disciplines. Click here to access T & F off-campus (you will need your Keele username and password to log-in).

Wiley Online Library
Access the full text of over 1,400 journals covering a range of disciplines. Click here to access Wiley off-campus (you will need your Keele username and password to log-in).

Searching for E-Books


E-books can be read in full, online, on or off campus.

You can search for e-books that the Library has bought by using Library Search and using the "Search Books and More" option. Enter the title or keywords and from the results, use the filters to select "Full Text Online" and then select "Books" from the Resource Type filters. This will show you the e-book. Click the "View Online" link to log-in.

If you just want to browse the e-book collections we subscribe to you can access them from the following links, but the best way to search for e-books is via Library Search.

Searching for Newspaper Articles


The following services provide full-text access to a large number of newspapers:

ProQuest European Newsstream (previously UK Newsstand)
Provides the searchable full-text of articles published in around 30 UK newspapers including The Times, Telegraph, Guardian and The Independent.

Nexis UK 
A news and business service which includes around 12,000 publications, including worldwide, national and local newspapers.

The Times Digital Archive 
Search the complete digital edition of The Times from 1785-2006. The entire newspaper is captured with all articles, advertisements and illustrations/photos.



To search for theses held in the Library, use Library Search to do a standard keyword search and then filter the resource type to include 'Dissertations'. The following resources may also be of use:

The British Library ETHOS project provides electronic access to research theses from many UK universities.

Index to Theses 
A searchable listing of theses with abstracts accepted for higher degrees by universities in Great Britain and Ireland since 1716. You can only access the Index to Theses from computers on the Keele network.

Choose your subject area and then select the module guide from the list. When viewing your list, select any resource to view more details, including links to e-books, e-journals and websites and the availability of print copies in the Library. From here, you can access Library Search to view additional details, place a request on an item or use other borrower services.
