Welcome to Modern Languages
The Language Centre at Keele provides Arabic, Mandarin Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Russian and Spanish language and culture modules for Keele students and staff.
You may be a complete beginner or simply want to brush up your existing skills, or perhaps you are looking for a formal language qualification. Whatever your need, we can provide a flexible, guided route to achieving your goals.
Modules are typically taught over an 11-week semester, with 2 contact hours per week.
We offer 2 levels of Arabic.
We offer 6 levels of Chinese, from absolute beginner to intermediate.
We offer 10 levels of French, from absolute beginners to post-A-level.
We offer 10 levels of German, from absolute beginners to post-A-level.
We offer 2 levels of Italian.
We offer 6 levels of Japanese, from absolute beginners to intermediate.
We offer 6 levels of Russian, from absolute beginners to intermediate.
We offer 10 levels of Spanish, from absolute beginners to post-A-level.

Can I achieve a qualification?
You may choose to enrol for one semester only or take a number of modules for more systematic language learning and the opportunity to achieve an Enhanced Degree Title or a record of achievement on your HEA report.
Which level should I study?
The Language Centre offers up to 10 levels (stages 1 - 10), from beginner to post A level. It is important to select the appropriate level based on your previous experience. These stages are comparable to the Common European Framework Reference (CEFR) for further details please see Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
How are classes timetabled?
Times for classes are dependent on the Keele undergraduate timetable and will be available from the beginning of the academic year.
What are the costs?
If you choose a Modern Language module as a free-standing elective within your undergraduate degree programme there is no additional cost.
If your principal programme does not allow you to take any free-standing elective modules you can still enrol on one language module per semester free of charge. Equally, if you can only choose one free-standing elective per year you can take a second module in the same language without additional charges.
Students who have sufficient free-elective space but would like to take one or more Modern Language modules in addition to their degree have to pay a module fee of £250 for the first module and £199 for a second module in the same language in the same year.
